Counterfeits, long a thorny issue for online marketplaces, are now posing a significant challenge for platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and China’sWeChat, and a lesser—but growing—problem for sites such as Twitter,according to interviews with more than a dozen brands and investigators. While few hard numbers are available, the problem has made governments take notice: In the U.K., authorities launched their first countrywide operation targeting fake goods on social media last year, after these sites overtook e-commerce platforms as the biggest source of complaints for online counterfeits.
